Taylor Swift ruled out of Glasto by new Eras shows

Taylor Swift has announced 14 extra European dates for her Eras tour, ruling out the possibility of a heavily-rumoured headline slot at Glastonbury.

It was revealed yesterday (5 July) that the pop star will now be playing Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on all three days of the festival next year. Previously, there had been a gap in her schedule on Sunday 30 June, Glastonbury’s closing night.

The pop star will play also extra nights in Paris, Stockholm, Sweden, Lisbon, Lyon, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Warsaw and Vienna.

The outing, produced by Taylor Swift Touring, will commence on 9 May 2024 at Paris La Défense Arena (cap. 40,000) in France and conclude on 17 August at Wembley Stadium (90,000) in London.

Swift also revealed yesterday that US rock band Paramore will be the support act for her European dates. Paramore opened the first two nights of Swift’s US leg in Glendale, Arizona, before embarking their own headline tour.

The announcement of the European leg came soon after the star announced her first round of international dates, in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.

Swift currently has 14 dates remaining of her North American stadium tour, which sparked “historically unprecedented demand”.

In the US, Eras is tipped to eclipse Swift’s 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour, which became the country’s highest-grossing tour in history, selling over two million tickets for 38 shows for a total of $266.1 million.

Promoted by AEG’s Messina Touring Group and AEG Presents, the 53-date trek was the second highest-grossing worldwide tour of 2018 behind Ed Sheeran’s record-breaking Divide run, grossing $345.1m from 2,888.892 ticket sales, as per Pollstar‘s year-end rankings.

OVO Hydro teams on climate change initiative

Glasgow’s OVO Hydro has teamed up with climate change charity Music Declares Emergency to help launch its new Fan Club for Climate Change initiative ahead of Earth Day this weekend.

Launched last night at Paramore’s sold-out show, the scheme is appealing for music fans to sign-up and join a call for action for governments and business leaders. The club will allow members to create their own spaces and communities across music venues, towns, and universities and in online spaces internationally.

A team of local Fan Club for Climate Change volunteers were on-hand at the 14,300-cap Scottish venue to encourage gig goers to sign-up to the initiative, which will give them access to weekly prizes and offers including free festival tickets and early bird access, messages from their favourite musicians, opportunities to get involved with community events and tips on ways they can be part of the climate movement to create systemic change.

“With the fight against climate change top of our agenda, we are always looking for ways we can support initiatives and organisations who share the same goal”

“With the fight against climate change top of our agenda, we are always looking for ways we can support initiatives and organisations who share the same goal,” says Debbie McWilliams, director of live entertainment at OVO Hydro. “As an industry, we have the power and influence to make real change and we are proud to be a venue pushing the agenda forward in the global entertainment space.”

Founded by Savages drummer Fay Milton, folk artist Sam Lee and a group of music industry professionals including Ninja Tune’s Peter Quicke, Fan Club for Climate Change is the latest initiative from Music Declares Emergency, which was launched in 2019.

The charity is calling on people within the industry to declare a climate emergency and work towards making the cultural and operations changes necessary towards a carbon neutral future.

The launch of the initiative lands as OVO Hydro gears up to celebrate a year since being awarded the world’s first A Greener Arena (AGA) certification. Awarded by A Greener Festival, AGA takes a holistic approach to sustainability, not only looking at emissions and environmental impacts but also people, inclusion and wellbeing.

When We Were Young fest opening day cancelled

The first day of Live Nation’s When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas was cancelled following a high wind warning.

The 85,000-cap “emo nostalgia” festival, staged at Las Vegas Festival Grounds, was an instant sensation when it was announced in January, with extra dates added due to demand.

Scheduled to feature the same line-up over three days on 22-23 and 29 October, headlined by Paramore and My Chemical Romance, organisers took the decision to cancel last weekend’s opening night as a result of adverse weather.

“When We Were Young Festival organisers have spent the last several days proactively preparing the festival grounds for a windy Saturday,” says a statement to ticket-holders. “The National Weather Service has now upgraded their Saturday forecast to a High Wind Warning, including dangerous 30-40mph sustained winds with potential 60mph gusts. Under advisement of the National Weather Service and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, we have no other choice than to cancel today’s When We Were Young Festival.

“The safety of our fans, artists and staff will always be our top priority”

“The safety of our fans, artists and staff will always be our top priority. This was not a decision that came lightly. We know many of you travelled to the area to have a spectacular day with your favourite bands and have been looking forward to this day for months. We were equally as excited and are devastated to have to share this news.”

The second day of the event proceeded as planned yesterday (Sunday 23 October), with more than 60 bands playing across three stages in 12 hours. Other artists included Bring Me the Horizon, Avril Lavigne, A Day to Remember, AFI, Bright Eyes, Jimmy Eat World, Taking Back Sunday and Pvris.

The 2023 edition of When We Were Young will feature a pop-punk twist and sold out earlier this month before the inaugural festival had even started.  Headliners Blink-182 and Green Day will be joined by the likes of 30 Seconds To Mars, The Offspring, Good Charlotte, 5 Seconds of Summer and All Time Low, Yellowcard, Rise Against, Sum 41, Pierce the Veil, Gym Class Heroes, Michelle Branch, Thrice, Rise Against, Simple Plan and New Found Glory. General admission tickets started at US$249.99.
