Mighty Hoopla Weekender heads to Malta

Mighty Hoopla, a London-based pop festival showcasing the best of pop, alternative and queer culture, is heading to Malta in 2025.

In January, the Superstruct Entertainment-backed festival waved goodbye to its annual sister festival, Mighty Hoopla Weekender, at Butlins on the south coast of England.

In its place, Mighty Hoopla Weekender will be exported to Malta from 26–29 September 2025. The festival will take place across several venues on the archipelago including Cafe Del Mar (a sunset venue in St. Paul’s Bay), Gianpula Village (a 6,000-capacity multi-room venue) Bora Bora (Mighty Hoopla’s exclusive hotel) and Little Armier Beach (a private beach).

The lineup is yet to be announced but organisers have promised “some of your favourite UK artists alongside some excellent European LGBTQ+ talent and collectives”.

The likes of Sugababes, Steps, Jessie Ware, Cheryl, Chaka Khan, TLC, Kelly Rowland and Kelis have performed at Mighty Hoopla in London since it launched in 2017.

Malta has become a hotspot for summer festivals and concerts thanks to its 300 days of annual sunshine and beautiful beaches. However, Mighty Hoopla’s organisers have chosen the Mediterranean island for its LGBTQ+ rights.

“Malta is one of the few countries in the world to have made LGBTQ+ rights equal at a constitutional level”

“Since October 2015, ILGA-Europe has ranked Malta No.1 in terms of LGBTQ+ rights legislation out of 49 observed European countries, a ranking it has upheld for over 9 years now,” reads a statement from the festival. “Malta is one of the few countries in the world to have made LGBTQ+ rights equal at a constitutional level.”

Mighty Hoopla launched in 2017 in east London’s Victoria Park on the Sunday after the two-day Field Day festival – both of which were then produced by Broadwick Live.

In 2018, Mighty Hoopla and Field Day moved to south London’s Brockwell Park (cap. 30,000) after AEG Presents/Goldenvoice was awarded a five-year contract for the exclusive use of Victoria Park for events. AEG Presents’ All Points East was launched that same year.

In 2019, Field Day festival moved again, trading fields for warehouses located at Meridian Water in north London. Mighty Hoopla remained at Brockwell Park and Broadwick Live launched new festival Cross The Tracks on the Sunday of the same weekend.

Hoopla expanded to a two-day festival in 2022, taking place on a Friday and Saturday while Cross the Tracks followed on Sunday. Both festivals were acquired by Superstruct in 2023.

The flagship festival will return to Brockwell Park on 31 May and 1 June 2025 with acts including Ciara, Kesha, Jojo, Loreen, G Flip, Kate Nash, Moonchild Sanelly and more.
