Cliff Richard grosses £1.1m from single live show

Last Friday’s Cliff Richard show at Manchester’s 2,341-seat Bridgewater Hall grossed more than £1.1 million after being broadcast to cinemas in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The concert – part of the veteran singer’s Live Nation-promoted Cliff Richard Live: 60th Anniversary Tour – was broadcast live on Friday 12 October, with encore screenings on Sunday 14th. Over the two dates, the event was shown in 517 cinemas on almost 1,000 screens across the British Isles, and was attended by over 80,000 people.

The live broadcast was directed by Brian Klein and produced by Sassy Films and CinemaLive. Total gross so far is £1,115,797, with several cinemas still to report their takings.

CinemaLive co-director and executive producer Janelle Mason says: “We feel so privileged to have brought Sir Cliff’s 60th-anniversary concert to so many excited fans around the world. We knew this would be a very special event as this legendary artist has impacted the lives of thousands with his music.

“The box-office result is proof that a live cinema broadcast is a wonderful way to bring artists and fans together”

“The box-office result is proof that a live cinema broadcast is a wonderful way to bring artists and fans together to simultaneously share in an immersive and uplifting experience. A smash hit for all concerned.”

The concert was also broadcast to cinemas across Europe (Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Gibraltar and Malta) over the weekend, and will be screening in Denmark on 24 and 28 October, Canada on 6 November and Australia and New Zealand on 10 and 11 November.

Malcolm Smith, manager of Sir Cliff (pictured), comments: “Cliff was keen to try something new for his 60th anniversary year to make sure as many of his fans as possible could be a part of his celebration tour. We are delighted with the success of the live cinema broadcast, and the response from his fans around the world has been extremely positive.”

The record for the most successful concert screened in UK/Irish cinemas is held by violinist André Rieu, whose 2018 Maastricht concert grossed more than £1.66m.
