Compared to its neighbouring countries, Colombia and Peru, Ecuador is a relatively tiny market, though filled with a fanbase that dotes on metal as much as the ever-popular LatAm artists based in the region.
When the major players roll into town, they normally play at the 36,000-capacity Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, home to three of Quito’s biggest football clubs in Deportivo Quito, El Nacional, and Universidad Católica.
LatAm heavyweights such as Bad Bunny, Marc Anthony, and Daddy Yankee all performed there in the last year, and despite plans to demolish the 71-year-old venue and replace it with a $200m structure, nothing has been done at the time of writing. Initial plans include a convention centre, museum, underground road connections, and between 8,000 and 10,000 parking spaces, Fernando Carrión, advisor to the mayor of Quito, told El Comercio newspaper.
The 16,000-capacity Coliseo General Rumiñahui, an indoor arena also situated in the capital, offers a great alternative, having hosted acts as varied as Judas Priest, Shakira, Def Leppard, Sebastián Yatra, and Fonseca since its inception in 1992.
