M4music is a non-commercial festival aimed at promoting the local pop music scene. It is organised by the Migros Culture Percentage, a private promoter of culture. The latest developments in pop music are discussed at the Conference. These discussions are often picked up by the media and thus made accessible to a wider public.
The conference will address the music industry’s most pressing current issues. Björn Beneditz, creative consultant and performer of Deichkind, will dwell on when and how multimedia-supported and ecstatic stage spectacles make sense. The pop critic Jens Balzer will mercilessly dissect Swiss bands that are intent on making it abroad in «The Grill». He will also read from his much talked-about book «Pop. Ein Panorama der Gegenwart» («Pop. A Panorama of Our Times»). He will do that twice; once when sober and again late at night. Nigel House, co-owner of the legendary London record label «Rough Trade» is going to elaborate on the record label as a cultural site.
While international stars like The Shins, Frank Turner, The Slow Show and others bring along their indie pop, SBTRKT (DJ set), James Hersey, Jan Blomqvist & Band, Roosevelt and Pantha Du Prince will furnish danceable electro pop. Hip hop fans will be delighted to learn that Young Fathers, Oddisee & Good Compny, Cakes Da Killa and Loyle Carner are also in the line-up. However, center stage of the 20th edition of m4music is reserved for Swiss artists: many of the program acts come from Switzerland: Fai Baba, Damian Lynn or Baze are among them, as well as newcomers such as Nemo, Jeans for Jesus, Odd Beholder and Aïsha Devi.
