Experienced booker and talent buyer Baris Basaran has joined UK promoter MJR Group as head of eastern and central Europe.
In the newly created position, Basaran will work alongside MJR promotions director Mike Jones to expand the Bristol-based company’s booking and promotion activities into the central and eastern European (CEE) region. “We’ll be doing that with a mixture of touring at all levels – arenas, clubs and theatres – and of all styles, the same as usual,” Jones tells IQ. “We’ll also have an increased [CEE] presence with festival bookings in the future, too.”
Originally from Istanbul, Basaran was most recently head of booking and festivals at Dusseldorf-based SSC Music Group. He previously worked in a talent buyer/booker capacity at Romania’s ARTmania festival and Turkish promoters Pozitif and Charmenko, among others.
The MJR Group promotes thousands of concerts in the UK annually, and many more overseas, chiefly in Australia and New Zealand. It recently organised its first shows in Dubai, and is also active in Asia and South Africa.
During his career as a promoter and talent booker, Basaran has confirmed more than 1,000 shows, ranging from 500-capacity clubs to stadium-level shows with Rihanna, Metallica, Lady Gaga, Iron Maiden and more.
“I’m so happy to be joining such a dynamic and forward-thinking company”
In addition to SSC’s New Fall Festival, he has also worked as the main-stage booker and talent buyer of more than 20 European festivals, including Sziget in Hungary, Exit in Serbia, Pohoda in Slovakia), Rock’n Coke in Turkey and InMusic in Croatia.
“I’m delighted to welcome Baris on board to the MJR Group as head of eastern and central Europe,” says Jones. “This latest recruitment will allow us to further expand our touring business into parts of Europe that until now we’d not entered.
“Baris joins with a wealth of experience and skills across multiples territories through multiple styles and genres of events. He also brings with him a reputation for working hard and thinking outside the box – two qualities that directly align with how we already operate. I’m thrilled to have him on board, and to start the next chapter of our journey and expansion.”
Basaran adds: “I’m so happy to be joining such a dynamic and forward-thinking company, with a focus to expand the business to other territories. MJR are an ambitious team, and it’s exciting for me to use our collective backgrounds and experiences to achieve success together.”
