Jimmy Nederlander dies aged 94

James Morton Nederlander, the long-serving chairman of the Nederlander Organization, one the last major family-run live entertainment promoters and venue owners in the United States, has died aged 94.

Nederlander, known as Jimmy, took over the running of the company following the death of his father, David T. Nederlander, in the 1960s. Under his leadership, the Nederlander Organization has grown to encompass nine Broadway theatres (second only to the Shubert Organization), a number of other theatres across the US and in the West End of London, a theatrical production division and concert promoters Nederlander Concerts (which also operates a number of venues in California) and Paragon Presents, a joint venture with TAG Presents.

“The world has lost one of its great impresarios,” his son, company president James L. Nederlander, tells AP.

Nederlander produced or co-produced over 100 theatrical shows, including Annie, Copenhagen and La Cage aux Folles, and hosted several lucrative Walt Disney productions, such as Tarzan, Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, at Nederland Organization theatres.

Upcoming Nederlander Concerts shows include Culture Club at the Statesman Skyline Theater at the Long Center (7,000-cap.), Radiohead at the Shrine Audiotorium in Los Angeles (6,300-cap.) and Yes at the City National Grove of Anaheim (1,700-cap.).
