Inaugural Reeperbahn New York a success

The German showcase at Indie Week, Reeperbahn Festival's first American event, was well received by A2IM and the German and US governments

Reeperbahn New York Edition, Ai2M Indie Week

The first Reeperbahn Festival New York Edition won praise from German and American industry figures alike following a successful first outing last week.

The Reeperbahn showcase – its first outside Germany – saw Israeli electropop rapper, singer and producer Adi Ulmansky, Swedish hip-hop artist Rebstar, German psych-pop band Fenster, German dance music producer Moonboy Inc., German pop-noir band Malky, Canadian rap act Grand Analog and German blues guitarist and singer Jesper Munk perform to an audience of around 280 North American delegates and fans at the Gramercy Theatre in Manhattan as part of the American Association of Independent Music (A2IM)’s Indie Week.

The showcase was open to Indie Week delegates and members of the public who had won tickets through The Village Voice newspaper.

Richard James Burgess, CEO of A2IM, says: “The Reeperbahn Festival showcase is the first time we have included an official international live music event at Indie Week. We are looking forward to expanding our relationship with Reeperbahn Festival in 2017.”

The showcase was open to Indie Week delegates and members of the public who had won tickets through The Village Voice newspaper

“It was a very intense three days of valuable meetings,” comments Tobias Lamp of Hamburg’s Superstition Entertainment, who was a member of the Reeperbahn delegation. “I made some significant business contacts and [was] able to negotiate with American streaming partners directly for the first time. I’m coming back!”

Following the New York event, Andrea DaSilva of the US government’s department of commerce announced that it will support American companies which want to attend the main Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg in September. “The event is a dynamic hub [which] offers our companies good options for successful business with the European and international music industries,” comments DaSilva.

The New York Edition was supported by the German Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt, AA). An AA spokesman says: “For the music business in particular, which has to be able to compete in a global and increasingly digital market, international networks and co-productions are becoming more and more important. The aim is to support international networking for the German music industry through a wide variety of projects, thereby making it more competitive. It is for this reason the Federal Foreign Office  provided support for the Reeperbahn Festival New York Edition. ”

A2IM, the largest music-industry association in North America, welcomed 789 companies to Indie Week, which took place from 13 to 16 June. The 23 Reeperbahn delegates comprised nearly a third of the 76 non-American attendees.
